Question: Explain motion and rest with the help of examples in details.
Motion and rest are two fundamental concepts in physics that describe the state of an object in terms of its position and movement. Let’s understand both terms with the help of few examples.
Motion:
Motion refers to the change in position of an object with respect to its surroundings or frame of reference and wrt time. Motion is described in terms of change in position, speed and acceleration.
Rest:
Rest refers to the state of an object when position of an object does not change wrt to its surrounding or frame of reference and wrt to time.
It is very important to keep in mind that the concept of rest and motion both is relative. An object may be at rest with respect to one observer but in motion with respect to another observer in same time.
For example:
a. A book placed on a table: When a book is placed on a table and remains stationary, it is at rest with respect to the table. However, it is in motion relative to the Earth, which is rotating and moving around the Sun.
b. A parked car: A car parked on the side of a road is considered to be at rest relative to the road. However, it is in motion relative to the Earth and other celestial bodies.
c. A person sitting on a chair: When a person sits on a chair and does not change their position, they are at rest with respect to the chair. However, they are in motion relative to the Earth’s rotation and its motion around the Sun.
It is important to consider the frame of reference or surroundings when determining whether an object is in motion or at rest. The frame of reference is the point of view from which motion or rest is observed. Different observers may have different frames of reference, leading to different conclusions about whether an object is in motion or at rest.
